Harmony and Horror Exhibition

Hey guys!

Firstly, the Charity Art Auction we organised to raise money for the victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami was a huge success. We raised  £735 for the charity Shelterbox who were very thankful for everyone's efforts.

A humongous thankyou to everyone who was involved in the organisation and running of the auction, everyone who donated artwork and other items and thankyou to everyone who came down and bought something.

U:1 Artist Collective and been busy organising and creating work for the latest exhibition 'Harmony and Horror'.

PRIVATE VIEW is on 7th MAY 2011 6-9 pm
Food and wine available

The exhibition is open daily from 10am-5pm from the 10th MAY to 13th MAY 2011

To read more about the concept see the text below -

In nature, the sublime is distinct from beauty due to its invocation of contrasting aesthetic experiences; “an agreeable kind of horror” as the writer Joseph Addison put it. Whereas beauty is bound within the form of an object, in experiencing the boundlessness of the sublime the imagination is moved to awe by what is ‘dark, uncertain and confused’. Vast magnitudes and the power to overwhelm characterize the fullest feeling of the sublime, that of experiencing pleasure from the knowledge of the observers nothingness and oneness in nature.
As part of ‘Harmony and Horror: Interpretations of the Sublime’, 11 artists have been invited to create an environment that explores their personal interpretation of the transcendent nature of the sublime. Challenging the conventional ways of looking at and moving within the space, the artists hope to create an emotive and contemplative atmosphere that will confound the senses of the perceiver.
Featuring works by Charlotte Patton, Eve Woodbridge, Lee McDonald, Hannah Jump, Amber Donovan, Helen Manley, Sandy Wager, Andrew Knights, Danielle Woodbridge and Clare L Larkin, Meredith Fisk and David Hadley.

Hopefully see you there!

U:1 'Party For Your Eyes' set up day

Hey everyone!

Sunday was the day we set up the 'Party For Your Eyes' exhibition and it was a huge success- eventually.

The day started early at 7 (which was really 6 because the clocks jumped forward) and we set off through the mist and the fog, in car and van to Bristol.

After a few hours of throwing fruit around- dancing outside Little Chef and trying to catch some zzz's we arrived in Bristol where we started acting a bit more professional.

For the next SIX hours we nailed/drilled/assembled/tacked/drew/drank tea/bought tools/tried to stay awake/rigged and the result was better than expected!

Included in the exhibition are spinning collaborative windmills, spinning kaleidoscope paintings, spinning fan art, photos, window drawings, paintings, drawings and a spinning umbrella with birds attached.

Here are a few photos of the day-

More photos to come and they will be posted soon!

If you would like to see the exhibition in all its glory then pop over to Knowle, Bristol and go to the Broadwalk shopping centre! We are having a closing party on 9th April from 11am-3 pm and there will be tea and cake and a chance to meet us artists involved.

Thanks for reading!

U:1 Artist Collective presents ‘Party for your eyes’, a group exhibition of new works created specifically for the shop-style setting of the Boardwalk Arts gallery. Combining a diverse selection of working methods and approaches, the amalgamated structure of an artist collective provides the basis for this exhibition of kinetic, collaborative, site-specific and experimental works.
Drawing inspiration from the infinite visual possibilities of the kaleidoscope, ‘Party for your eyes’ controls the viewpoint of the observer by only allowing the works to be seen through the gallery windows. Inside, however, multiple objects and images are layered together to create unexpected combinations. Echoing the constantly evolving nature of the collective itself, this exhibitions aims to consider whether diverse practices can be combined visually to open new avenues of exploration.
Based in Plymouth, U:1 Artist Collective draws together emerging creative practitioners from all areas of the visual arts, in order to create a productive and challenging social network. A regular program of exhibiting opportunities, within the city and beyond, allows the group members to experiment with fresh approaches to presenting and questioning the nature of their chosen mediums.
Featuring works by Charlotte Patton, Eve Woodbridge, Lee McDonald, Hannah Jump, Amber Donovan, Helen Manley, Sandy Wager, Alexandra Kovacs, Andrew Knights, Clare L Larkin, Mazzie Curnow, Robert Lang, Becky Frogson and Chopstar.

Senses as a starting point - workshop

Hey followers and friends! .

U:1 are working on a variety of workshops that we wish to take into the community!

This week Steph hosted a fun and interesting workshop which produced some interesting results.

We began by guessing the contents of some cups using our sense of smell, and we wrote down what we thought was inside the cups.
Then using those answers we picked a few words and used them as a starting point to create very quick sculptures out of newspapers. There were words such as curry, boot polish, nail varnish remover, coffee.

There were some very intriguing shapes emerging and the final masterpieces can be seen here.

And after we had made the newspaper sculptures we used them to create very hilarious stories! It was a great laugh so thanks to Steph for running it.

Next week we have a very exciting workshop idea! We are going to use digital cameras and camera phones and give eachother 'photographic' instructions and in teams we will adventure into the streets of plymouth and try to complete those photographic challenges. Should be very interesting indeed!
